This study characterizes corona and surface discharges under varying atmospheric pressures, simulating sea-level conditions (1013. 25 mbar), descent and cruise altitudes (to 200 mbar) under power frequency voltages. A high-frequency current transformer is employed to capture the partial discharge signals. Detailed analysis of the partial discharge signal shows an increase in the rise time, time to half, pulse width, slew rate, voltage amplitude, and charge magnitude with altitude. But concurrently, a reduction in the inception voltage is reported for partial discharge with altitudes, suggesting an increase in the severity of the partial discharge signals on insulation with rising altitudes.
