A Measurement Method for Partial Discharge Characteristics in Direct-Bonded Copper Substrate Model Encapsulated with Silicone Gel

Abstract
Electrical insulation plays a critical role in highvoltage power electronic modules, which are becoming more compact with high power output. Silicone gel is widely used as an encapsulating insulation material in power modules. While its basic insulation properties are typically evaluated using needle electrodes, there is increasing demand for test electrode configurations that more accurately simulate the edge structures of electrodes on direct-bonded copper (DBC) substrates. This study proposes a measurement method for partial discharge characteristics using a DBC substrate model with patterned electrodes encapsulated in silicone gel. Partial discharge inception and extinction voltages were measured under repeated voltage sequences. The effects of grease and electrical prestress on insulation performance were also investigated.
