Effect of Few-Layer Graphene on the Dielectric Properties and Space Charge of Polypropylene/Graphene Nanocomposites

Abstract
Commodity polymer, polypropylene (PP) was mixed with commercial few-layer graphene (FLG) produced by mechanochemical exfoliation of graphite. The dielectric properties and space charges (SC) dynamism were investigated at <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$1 \text{wt}. {\%}$</tex> of FLG. It is well-known that SC play an important role on the dielectric behavior of insulating materials. The results show the presence of FLG agglomerates within the matrix. However, even with the presence of those agglomerates, the space charge accumulation within the nanocomposite were reduced compared to the neat PP and this is even more marked at higher temperature. It is proposed in this paper that morphology modification of PP caused by the nucleating effect of the filler, introduced deep traps that further reduced SC accumulation into the composite material. The contribution of FLG lead to a slight increase of the dielectric permittivity. Yet, it remains a good candidate for power cables insulation.
