Abstract
Abstract Using Gord Downie’s lyrics and Jeff Lemire’s graphic novel Secret Path (2016), this chapter explores the history and cultural genocide that occurred through the Canadian Residential schools. Students will be introduced to the historical events of the Residential schools, and the role that storytelling through graphic novels and songwriting have offered in the wake of the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation process to discuss and examine this horrific national tragedy. Additional resources include Ian Adam’s (1967) article on the life of Chanie Wenjack, the inspiration for the Secret Path, and video clips of the live concert that incorporated both the album and graphic novel. The lesson also introduces the students to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007).
