Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the psycho-social impact of the compliance culture in neoliberal institutions and the ‘quality’ of education they provide. Utilising a theoretical framework combining self-determination theory (SDT), ecological systems theory (EST) and the theory of cognitive dissonance, the lived experience of a liminal group of qualified teachers is examined. A counter narrative is revealed which highlights the need to reconnect with the value and purpose of higher education from a humanist perspective in order to ensure graduates develop the dispositions, skills and knowledge that will enable them to thrive in professional practice.
