Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores how business schools maintain legitimacy by strategically balancing innovation and conformity in a volatile global environment. It emphasizes the role of strategy in aligning with accreditation standards, meeting stakeholder expectations, and responding to geopolitical shifts, particularly around internationalization. The chapter highlights the pressures for change—whether sector-driven or externally imposed—and examines reform efforts focused on responsibility, sustainability, and citizenship. Drawing on cases from Australia, Canada, and the UK, it shows how shifts in public and regulatory sentiment rapidly challenge the legitimacy that universities previously took for granted, especially regarding international students. Finally, the chapter underscores the need for collective action, urging business schools to collaborate, adapt strategically, and communicate their value clearly to preserve their legitimacy and ensure continued stakeholder support.
