Mapping the roles of family caregivers in supporting health within the criminal justice system: a scoping review

Abstract
Incarcerated individuals face disproportionate health burdens, yet the role of family caregivers remains underexplored. This scoping review maps the literature on how family members support the health of incarcerated individuals. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines, we searched five databases (2000–25) and identified 27 eligible studies. Thematic analysis revealed four domains: (1) advocacy and navigation of fragmented systems; (2) the provision of emotional and psychological support; (3) systemic barriers, including stigma and exclusion from care planning; and (4) caregiver strain and moral distress. Findings highlight caregivers as essential yet marginalized actors in carceral health, underscoring the need for family-centred approaches.
