Abstract This article focuses on the contribution made by Gordon Logan to the understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common, persistent, and impairing mental health condition. The article documents his contribution to ADHD from our earliest clinical experiments to evidence that pointed us to response inhibition as a deficit in ADHD, and finally to a series of studies of ADHD using the stop signal task, drug effects, brain function, and genetics. Logan brought a cognitive psychology lens to research into the attention deficits in ADHD and by extension research on other disorders. His work reflects his belief that cognitive psychology allows for model-based measurement of specific processes and assessment of individual differences that provide insight into brains, minds, and psychopathology.
