Esta técnica comprende diversos exámenes que utilizan ondas sonoras de alta frecuencia, no perceptibles para el oído humano, que al interaccionar con los tejidos permiten obtener imágenes directas muy confiables sobre la estructura y el funcionamiento del corazón y de los vasos sanguíneos.No solo comprende la ecocardiografía, sino también la aplicación del efecto Doppler que permite analizar el flujo de sangre a través de las cavidades cardíacas, el funcionamiento de sus válvulas y las condiciones de flujo en los vasos periféricos, ya sea a nivel de los vasos del cuello, de arterias y venas de los miembros y de vísceras abdominales. ¿EN QUIÉNES SE PUEDE APLICAR?Al no utilizar radiación ni contrastes yodados, el estudio es inocuo, puede realizarse en todo paciente, a cualquier edad, incluso en mujeres embarazadas y sobre el feto, donde puede diagnosticar en forma prenatal malformaciones congénitas.Puede reiterarse sin peligro para el seguimiento correcto de distintas enfermedades y la evaluación de la eficacia de tratamientos.
