Smart grids have received much attention in recent years as a promising concept for the future of power networks. A smart grid involves increasing data collection and processing to improve power quality and potentially increase dependability of renewable energy sources. Increased data availability provides a better opportunity for advanced energy management and scheduling techniques for non-dispatchable sources. This paper serves as a review of optimization techniques used in literature to improve grid stability, minimize losses and lower operating costs. Single and multi-objective optimization techniques can be applied in a variety of problems to tune power electronics and dispatch available energy sources.
