Dual-Polarized Cosecant-Squared Beam-Shaped Array Antenna for mmWave Mobile Communications

Abstract
Mobile communication in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band offers high data rates but requires complex, power-intensive beamforming systems. This paper presents a cost-effective cosecant-squared (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$csc^{2}$</tex>) beam-shaped array antenna designed to reduce beamforming complexity and power consumption for base station applications. A compact, dual-polarized waveguide array antenna is developed operating between 37 GHz and 42 GHz. The <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$csc^{2}$</tex> radiation pattern is achieved by optimizing both amplitude and phase weights. Amplitude weights are generated using a dual-mode unequal ratio power splitter, while phase weights are obtained through dielectric rod loading. This ensures uniform power distribution to all users, regardless of distance from the base station. A Rotman lens is also incorporated for azimuth beam steering. The prototype is fabricated with 3D printing and PCB technologies and has been tested for beam-shaping and beam-forming performance.
