Abstract
Abstract This chapter details Rider Haggard’s life from 1912 to 1913 during which his depression began to lift and he was invited to be member of the Dominions Royal Commission visiting the self-governing colonies of white settlement: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland and Canada. Haggard resurrected his character Allan Quatermain in Marie, the first of a trilogy, completed by Child of Storm and Finished, dealing with the rise and fall of the Zulu kingdom in the nineteenth century. The Shepstone family approached Haggard to write a biography of Theophilus Shepstone, unable to do so he recommended James Stuart in his place. Haggard travelled to India and Ceylon prior to joining the Dominions Royal Commission on its trip to Australia and New Zealand where they visited all the major provincial cities to take evidence and inspect relevant institutions and industries. In Melbourne Haggard met actor-impresario Oscar Asche and agreed to a dramatization of Child of Storm.
