Abstract
Abstract This chapter details Rider Haggard’s life from 1914 to 1916. The Dominions Royal Commission visited Newfoundland and Canada as war with Germany loomed. Haggard broke the instruction not to give public speeches and when war was declared the commission returned to Britain. Oscar Asche’s production of Child of Storm, retitled Mameena, was staged in London. James Stuart comes to London with props from Zululand and Mandhlakazi and Kwili who train the cast in Zulu customs and dances. Haggard boosts recruitment and the training of local militias, though he opposes government censorship of war news. The war impacts the Haggard family: two nephews are killed as well as the sons of several close friends, including Rudyard Kipling. Meanwhile Haggard’s books gain new life due to the advent of the cinema. In January 1916 Haggard receives his “marching orders from the Royal Colonial Institute” to visit South Africa, Australasia and Canada to negotiate the post-war settlement of British servicemen.
