Abstract
Abstract This chapter details Rider Haggard’s 1916 journey around the world visiting South Africa, Australasia and Canada to negotiate the post-war settlement of British servicemen. He kept a low profile in South Africa in order not to jeopardize prime minister Louis Botha’s “great task of reconciliation” between Boer and Brit at a time when “many of the white population were openly anti-British and thus pro-German.” He meets public figures and old friends, including John Kotze. On the voyage to Australia, Haggard hatches plots for novels and keeps his diary, in which he reflects on turning sixty. From Australia he travels to New Zealand and then Canada where he learns a mountain has been named after him. Back in Britain Haggard is ordered to rest as the journey had affected his health and the Royal Colonial Institute issued his report, The After-War Settlement and Employment of Ex-servicemen.
