Abstract
Passive entertainment is basically where one sits back and enjoys a satisfying experience. As a tourist gaze, it is exemplified in the people who frequent, often internationally, various casinos to participate in roulette or attend racetracks to gamble on the horse. Also, passive is the entertainment provided by the jazz, folk, and classical music festivals as well as those offering comedy or film. Some passive entertainment enthusiasts travel to attend the annual Fringe Festival Society’s shows in Scotland, to view famous opera houses, or, when available, to attend new productions of the Cirque du Soleil, which are worldwide. As for active entertainment, pulling a lever or pressing a button on a fruit or slot machine attracts many a gambling tourist from afar. Some people who travel abroad frequently for business or professional reasons are enamored of sampling in their free time certain kinds of restaurants (e.g., offering continental, Brazilian, Mexican, Greek cuisine) in the cities visited. Delicious food is experienced as entertaining, as a visual and gustatory pleasure.
