A LCC-Series Compensation Network Optimization for Dipole Couplers in Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Abstract
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is essential for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) by avoiding the needs taking the AUV out of the water for charging. This paper proposes a new optimization method to design the inductor-capacitor-capacitor-series (LCC-S) resonant network of a WPT system for a dipole magnetic coupler used in AUVs. The main contributions of the proposed framework include considering multiple coupling coefficient scenarios simultaneously and incorporating weighted multi-objectives to maximize the efficiency and minimize output voltage and current deviations. Scenario-based weighting factors are introduced to enhance performance under weak coupling conditions. The proposed compensation network is validated by experiments in the lab, showing superior performance. It can maintain actual output voltage in a range of 0.9 to 1.05 per unit when subjected to air gap variations due to underwater turbulences, showing less variations of battery output power than the existing methods.
