Abstract
Cette étude s’intéresse à l’utilisation, durant les années 1930, de confrontations anachroniques d’œuvres d’art à des fins identitaires. Plusieurs historiens de l’art conservateurs au département des Peintures du musée du Louvre – notamment René Huyghe, Germain Bazin et Charles Sterling – usent de ces dialogues pour mettre en valeur une prétendue identité française. Leurs théories adoptent certains vocabulaires et codes de l’ethnographie, et la figure du peuple devient primordiale, comme symbole d’une permanence culturelle. Cette construction d’une histoire ethnographique de l’art a lieu en particulier dans la revue L’Amour de l’art et dans trois expositions : l’« Exhibition of French Art » (Londres, Royal Academy, 1932), « Les Peintres de la réalité » (Paris, musée de l’Orangerie, 1934) et « Chefs-d’œuvre de l’art français » (Paris, palais de Tokyo, 1937).
