Abstract
Dans cet article, nous contextualisons l’oeuvre de Margaret Sam‑Cromarty afin de faire ressortir son importance dans l’histoire du livre autochtone de ce que nous désignons aujourd’hui comme le Québec. La poétesse eeyou publie trois recueils entre 1992 et 2000, tous accessibles en version bilingue anglais-français. Pourtant, elle est absente des ouvrages ayant participé à l’institutionnalisation des littératures autochtones, dans les milieux tant francophones qu’anglophones. À première vue, cette exclusion et le manque d’études sur l’oeuvre de Sam‑Cromarty apparaissent comme une forme de marginalisation, mais en retraçant l’histoire de ces publications, ce qui émerge est le réseau de relations qui la soutient et la place importante qu’elle occupe au sein de la communauté eeyou. Afin d’intégrer son oeuvre à l’histoire de l’imprimé autochtone de la province, nous la situons dans le contexte des années 1990, présentons le recueil James Bay Memoirs (1992) et examinons les différents lieux de publication des trois livres de Sam-Cromarty. Nous souhaitons ainsi mieux comprendre son expérience comme écrivaine eeyou qui publie avant l’institutionnalisation des littératures autochtones au Québec.
