The power system protection of isolated microgrids powered by inverter-based resources (IBRs) presents unique challenges due to the limited fault currents and the dependency of fault characteristics on control strategies employed in IBRs. Fault currents contributed from IBRs differ in magnitude and characteristics compared to those from synchronous generators (SGs), making traditional power systems protection schemes ineffective. In this paper, key differences of the fault current behavior from IBRs and SGs are firstly explored; the functionality of protection schemes in inverter based isolated microgrids (IBIMGs), including the fault detection, fault protection, directional relaying, and fault classification, are then examined, demonstrating the associated challenges. A review of power system protection methods in the literature for IBIMGs is also conducted, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Future research directions in the protection of IBIMGs are recommended in the paper.
