Abstract
¿Qué hacen mis manos para otras y otros? (What are my hands doing for others?) This question invites the visitor to reflect on care and communality as part of the exhibition De la tierra somos, underlining its key values. Dedicated to functional pottery from the Oaxacan region and its surroundings in the south of Mexico, the exhibition is curated by the non-profit organization Innovando la Tradición, based in the city of Oaxaca. The show emerges from a longstanding collaboration with local potters that designers Diego Mier y Terán and Kythzia Barrera have undertaken over the last two decades around barro (clay), in what they define as a conscious design project. The first section, “Barro y Fuego”, offers an overview of pottery production throughout the region, in this latest iteration of an exhibition presented on various occasions since 2011 in Mexico and Europe. The second and new section presents the experiments of the Comunidad Alfarera de Aprendizaje (Learning Community of Potters), known as COMALA, a collaborative project that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and techniques between artisans, carried out as part of the Innovando la Tradición’s activities.
