İnsan toplumda birçok kişiyle bir arada, etkileşim halinde yaşamak durumundadır. Zaman zaman kendisiyle ve çevresiyle ilgili düşüncelerinde ya da davranışlarında sıkıntılara düşebilir. Böyle bir durumda kendisinin ve iletişimde olduğu kişilerin düşüncelerini anlama, davranışlarını anlamlandırma ihtiyacı duyar. Bunu sağlayabilirse kendi dikenlerini başkalarından, başkalarının dikenlerini de kendinden korumak için uygun mesafeyi alabilir.
