Abstract

The cascaded H-bridge (CHB) configuration enables the conversion of low DC voltage of photovoltaic (PV) modules into grid AC voltage without any boosting stage. However, active power mismatch among PV modules under partial shading poses significant control challenges, often resulting in partial range power control and deviation from maximum power point tracking (MPPT) or higher than required grid currents. This paper proposes a simple power control method for a grid-connected CHB inverter where extreme active power mismatches caused by partial shading is addressed by reactive power injection, which is minimized for any operating active power levels, resulting in MPPT for all PV modules without entering over-modulation. The proposed method is a distributed and scalable control system with reduced communication bandwidth requirement. The stability of the control system is analyzed and detailed design method is provided to ensure safe and reliable operation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through both simulation and experimental results for a 1.2 kW prototype with 3 PV modules.
