Abstract
En 2019, le gouvernement mexicain a lancé le projet de développement du Corridor interocéanique de l’isthme de Tehuantepec, une plateforme logistique et multimodale reliant les océans Pacifique et Atlantique grâce à la rénovation du chemin de fer transisthmique et de deux ports construits au XIX e siècle. L’objectif du corridor est d’accroître la connectivité avec les marchés mondiaux, en transportant efficacement les marchandises à travers les États de Veracruz et d’Oaxaca, sur la bande de terre la plus étroite du pays. M’appuyant sur des recherches historiques et ethnographiques, j’examine comment la situation et la géographie de l’isthme ont suscité un intérêt répété dans la région, façonnant les valeurs et les significations matérielles et idéologiques des infrastructures de transport. Dans cet article, j’analyse comment la modernisation du port de Salina Cruz, Oaxaca — un élément stratégique du corridor —, génère différentes idées et expériences de développement. Des concepts tels que la modernité, le progrès et la connectivité sont des points de départ pour discuter de quelle manière les infrastructures acquièrent un caractère presque mythique, légitimant les échecs et les attentes en matière de développement national mandat après mandat.
