Abstract
La demande exponentielle de sable dans le monde au cours des dernières décennies a stimulé son extraction et a favorisé les échanges. À la suite de Wolf, qui analyse les flux et la circulation des marchandises dans le temps et dans l’espace ainsi que la création d’interconnexions dans le contexte de l’essor du capitalisme, je propose d’analyser le sable en tant que pilier actuel du système capitaliste, les dynamiques de son extraction et les marchés qui en dérivent. L’article présente une double approche, la première articulée avec l’échelle internationale des marchés, et la seconde, centrée sur un exemple de marché local du sable extrait des cours d’eau dans un bassin versant du sud du Mexique partagé avec le Guatemala. Au-delà de la demande, de la faible valeur du sable sur les marchés et de l’importance de la proximité dans les échanges, un des éléments clefs qui émerge de ces interrelations est l’enchevêtrement des régulations entre les diverses échelles.
