Abstract
This chapter explores Amina Wadud’s life, particularly her formative work, Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text From a Woman’s Perspective (Wadud, 1999). This chapter will illustrate how Wadud’s intellectual and academic movement could be considered an example of invitational leadership. Wadud’s work provides an alternate perspective on Islam and women, stressing the revival of Islam as a progressive religion. This chapter focuses on arguments made by Amina Wadud, who emphasizes that the patriarchal appropriation of Islam stems from the social and cultural readings of the religious text that have survived in Muslim societies. Her movement provides an important space for women’s equality that challenges the dominant narratives and acts as a leadership model and catalyst for values such as justice, care, and faith. This chapter also critically examines this emerging discourse as a fundamental transformation reflecting the practice of an egalitarian Islam, as a foundation for educational leadership practices. Such attempts to change perspectives, challenge the status quo, and other practices could be considered lessons to be learned by educational leaders in our times.
