Abstract
Sheikh Abdalla Idris, a pioneer of Islamic education in North America, emigrated from Sudan in the late 1970s to pursue a doctorate at the University of Toronto. He soon found himself helping at the evening and weekend schools held in the basements of mosques. This endeavor was the first step of an arduous journey to initiate Islamic schools and Islamic education across North America and beyond. He established and directed organizations such as the Council of Islamic Schools in North America, the Center for Islamic Education in North America in the United States, the International Board of Educational Research and Resources, and many others. He was not just working at the management level: He was on the front line, rolling up his sleeves and developing and implementing the blueprint of Islamic and Arabic studies curricula. Sheikh Abdalla focused on the opportunities, not the obstacles. He established Islamic schools and Islamic education as a means of developing a strong Canadian/American-Muslim identity in the youth. His mission was to inculcate pride in the Muslim youths’ multiple identities and become active, responsible, and engaged citizens, upholding both their identities in unison, a notion taken for granted today.
