Abstract
Le Portugal est considéré comme un pays marginal et périphérique par rapport à l’ensemble de l’espace européen. Dans ce petit pays situé à l’extrémité occidentale de l’Europe, face à l’Atlantique, l’anthropologie a fait ses premiers pas progressivement au cours du XIXᵉ siècle, en se concentrant principalement sur les thèmes de la culture populaire et de l’identité nationale.Pendant les années de la dictature de Salazar, sous le régime de l’Estado Novo, l’anthropologie est, en grand partie, devenue un instrument au service du régime et s’est orientée également vers des études sur la race, marquées par une perspective colonialiste.C’est avec la Révolution des Œillets, à partir de 1974, que l’anthropologie portugaise— comme les sciences sociales en général — a pu enfin se développer dans un contexte européen et mondial.
