Este livro é voltado para estudantes dos cursos de engenharia, bem como profissionais de engenharia interessados em melhorar seus conhecimentos em teoria da probabilidade, e segue a orientação dos ensinamentos do renomado professor de estatística Ruy Aguiar da Silva Leme. Valendo-se registrar que o conhecimento de cálculo, como ministrado no ciclo básico das escolas de engenharia, é o suficiente para sua leitura; com destaque para a demonstração matemática de todos os teoremas. Neste particular o autor pensa estar dando uma contribuição valiosa, pois a maioria dos livros voltados para o assunto em questão, em geral, não contemplam uma exposição mais detalhada dos aspectos mais matemáticos envolvidos; e é sabido que as limitações explícitas na demonstração dos teoremas indicam o espaço de validade de suas aplicações.
