Police officers’ perceptions of helicopter units: ground-level attitudes toward an eye in the sky
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Abstract As an operational specialty unit, helicopter units are used by the police to respond to calls for service, assist ground-level officers, and provide aerial police presence. In light of their mandate, the work of helicopter units in the sky implicates in the work of police officers on the ground. As part of the present research, I queried a sample of police officers (N = 309) from two different police agencies in the USA that employ helicopter units regarding their perceptions of the purpose, utility, deterrence, benefits, and personal impacts of the helicopter unit. I also asked officers to indicate their overall support for the helicopter unit. My analyses revealed that officers perceived the helicopter unit favorably, with some nuance among questions and groups of officers. I discuss my findings in the context of policing research and practice, including with respect to specialty unit dynamics in policing.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
