ABSTRACT The medical device industry faces dynamic packaging challenges. In this age of increased data processing and miniaturization, medical manufacturers confront the dilemma of how to supply products with more enhanced features, while at the same time aiming to reduce the size and weight of product packages. Many manufacturers are looking to flex, or flex-rigid circuitry as the solution to create more compact and reliable medical equipment. Flex-rigid boards have many packaging advantages. The flex parts of the boards can be bent, twisted and folded to utilize a third dimension. This property can be used in complex and tight-fitting assemblies, where it would be otherwise impossible to accommodate several rigid boards and harnesses.
