Abstract
ABSTRACT As the industry continues to gain experience building high complexity, Storage and Server class lead-free hardware systems, new reliability risks continue to be identified and studied. Questions related to the survival and integrity of certain pin through hole (PTH) connector plastic housing materials have arisen due to observations of connector housing melting, form, fit, and function changes after exposure to elevated temperature lead-free processing. Further investigation into these observations revealed that a gap in understanding of allowable maximum peak temperatures and time at temperature during actual lead-free PTH wave soldering and solder fountain rework operations was present within the industry. Building upon earlier work in 2002 to characterize time and temperature data for various lead-free BGA devices [1], a new temperature mass study was crafted to study processing effects on various pinthrough-hole connector systems. This paper discusses early connector melting observations, time/temperature characterization approach, test vehicles employed, and final results obtained during primary attach wave and solder fountain rework lead-free processing. Resulting data and discussion covers various plastic housing materials and multiple connector technlogies.
