A Novel Positive Psychology Framework Applied as a Strategy to Address Drinking to Cope Behavior: A Case Example

Abstract
An increasing amount of research documents that women are more likely than men to drink alcohol to cope in response to stress and negative affect. This article uses a case example to describe how a novel positive psychological framework of empowered and disempowered patterns (Vitality Types) in behavior and cognition, was applied as an assets-based approach in the clinical setting with a woman diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and Major Depressive Disorder. The framework promotes positive self-perception and confidence to set healthy boundaries as a cognitive behavioral and positive psychology informed approach to reduce negative affect and limit alcohol consumption. Through homework activities designed to enhance self-awareness, the client developed personalized self-regulation strategies based on the Vitality Type framework to manage her negative affect and problematic drinking behavior while gaining a more positive, empowered outlook.
