Multi-core systems have been shown to offer significant advantages in terms of computing capability; however, they are also subject to considerable challenges in meeting airworthiness standards. This is due to the non-determinism that arises from interference between cores through shared resource channels. This paper introduces a Tailored Interference Mixer (TIM), a tool designed to generate ‘attacker’ programs that compete with safety-critical ‘victim’ programs for shared resources such as cache, memory, and buses. The execution of parameterised scenarios enables TIM to quantify the performance degradation caused by single resource contention and combined interference. The experimental findings demonstrate that the degradation in performance resulting from combined interference across multiple shared resources is notably more substantial than that caused by isolated resource contention. These findings underscore the pressing need for a more comprehensive interference analysis activity to be incorporated within aviation certification processes.
