La relation entre direction générale et élus municipaux n’est pas exempte d’enjeux, notamment dans les municipalités québécoises de moins de 10 000 habitants. Alors même que la fonction élective peut revêtir certaines spécificités dans ces municipalités, comment les élus perçoivent-ils le rôle et la relation avec la direction générale et comment ces conceptions peuvent, éventuellement, teinter la fonction élective ? En prenant appui sur les travaux qui analysent les liens entre administration et politique, et à partir des résultats d’un sondage mené auprès d’élus de municipalités de moins de 10 000 habitants (n= 126) et de la réalisation d’entrevues semi-dirigées (n= 32), nous montrons que si la définition du rôle de la direction générale est claire pour les élus, elle repose, au quotidien, sur des relations balisées en fonction du contexte, donnant lieu à des zones d’interaction variées entre administration et politique, pouvant définir un leadership politique spécifique.
