Abstract
Abstract Selenium (Se) and sulfur are both members of group VI elements and they share many similar chemical properties (3). Se occurs in soils and is absorbed by plants. Whereas some geographic areas have highly seleniferous soils, Se is deficient in others. Seleniferous areas in the United States are primarily located in the Great Plains. Other such regions have been identified in Australia, Canada, Israel, Ireland, Colombia, and China. Elemental Se has several allotropic forms: (a) amorphous; (b) crystalline (red); or (c) metallic (gray). Possible valence states are 2-(selenide), 0 (elemental), 2+, 4+ (selenite), and 6+ (selenate) (3). Many metals react with the selenide form. Se is used as a feed ingredient for animals; a dietary supplement for humans; an ingredient in electronic and photocopier components; a pigment for ceramics, paints, and plastics; and an additive in glass manufacture and in metallurgy. Other forms of Se are being investigated for various therapeutic purposes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates the amount of Se in animal diets at 0.3 ppm. The Time-Weighted Average Threshold-Limit Value for Se in air is 0.2 mg/m3 •
