Abstract
Cette étude analyse l’engagement de Mgr Kersuzan dans le maintien de l’influence catholique et culturelle française en Haïti entre 1886 et 1929. Missionnaire breton, il développe en Haïti une pastorale caractérisée principalement par son hostilité au vodou et au protestantisme, envisagés comme des menaces pour l’hégémonie catholique et la culture française. D’abord critique envers l’expansion américaine en Haïti, il finit par soutenir l’occupation de 1915, qu’il voit comme une garantie de stabilité pour le pays. Cette étude montre comment ses campagnes anti-vodou, ses rapports privilégiés avec les autorités françaises et ses relations avec les élites politiques locales et américaines traduisent une ambition de préserver l’héritage catholique et français en Haïti.
