Abstract
Marcien Ferland est natif de Saint-Boniface, Manitoba. Musicien, maître de chapelle et chef d’orchestre, il découvre au tournant des années 1970 les chansons traditionnelles des « artistes populaires » des villages franco-manitobains et entreprend d’en faire la collecte. Son recueil Chansons à répondre du Manitoba , paru en 1979 aux Éditions du Blé, est encore aujourd’hui l’ouvrage de référence pour quiconque s’intéresse aux chansons et aux coutumes des Prairies francophones. Ce portrait s’appuie sur deux entretiens réalisés à son domicile, aux Hameaux des Chênes, le 28 mars 2024 et le 6 mars 2025, au cours desquels il est revenu sur son parcours de musicien, d’auteur et d’ethnographe des Prairies.
