Gyrosphygmogram: A Novel Wrist-based Wearable Method for Heart Rate Variability Assessment

Abstract
This study introduces the Gyrosphygmogram (GSG), a novel gyroscopic signal derived from arterial wall motion, as a new way to complement traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) and chest-based gyrocardiography (GCG) for heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. GSG, collected at the wrist using advanced inertial measurement units (IMUs), offers enhanced practicality, comfort, and robustness to motion artifacts compared to GCG. Using our proposed algorithm, we achieved accurate and independent peak detection in both GSG and GCG without reliance on ECG.Results demonstrated strong correlations between GSG and ECG-derived HRV metrics, with GSG exhibiting reduced error margins compared to GCG. This study emphasizes the potential of GSG for incorporation into wearable health devices, offering a practical and efficient solution for continuous, real-time cardiovascular monitoring.
