Design of a Novel Hybrid Magnet Variable Flux Motor with Constrained Magnetization Current

Abstract
This work investigates and improves the competitiveness of hybrid magnet variable flux motors with respect to the regular interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). The broadly used double-V structure is adopted in this study as the rotor of the reference machine. Initially, several design maps are obtained for designing the series hybrid layer without varying the dimensions of the top permanent magnet (PM) layer. Then, to avoid oversizing the drive inverter, a new design procedure is proposed for constraining the remagnetization current in the design stage. Next, several derived designs are proposed to reduce the utilisation of the rare-earth magnets and enhance the flux variability. In addition, a new hybrid-magnet VFM is proposed having radial and axial magnetization-state-dependent asymmetries. These asymmetries are highly dependent on the magnetization state of the machine which is controlled by the amplitude of the injected d-axis current. The proposed machine enables reducing the rare-earth PM content by 30% along with constraining the magnetization current to 1.5 times the rated current.
