Optimal Protection Coordination of Microgrids Powered by Synchronverters During Unbalanced Faults

Abstract
Protecting microgrids is challenging due to their dynamic operating conditions. Synchronverters, which are inverters that mimic synchronous generators, can provide virtual inertia and support microgrids' stability. However, hard current limiters would force synchronverters to act as current sources during faults, rather than voltage sources with virtual inertia and damping. To address this issue, a current limitation scheme employing adaptive virtual impedance fault current limiters (VI-FCLs) is proposed. This new control scheme is effective for balanced and unbalanced faults, ensuring microgrid stability and enhancing its protection sensitivity. Directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) are utilized to maintain proper protection coordination among all relays. An optimal protection coordination (OPC) scheme is then introduced to determine the minimum operating time for all relays while ensuring coordination. Results confirm the effectiveness of the control scheme in current limitations and maintaining protection coordination under various fault scenarios.
