Abstract

A compact anti-metal tag antenna with excellent performance of far-field omnidirectional radiation for ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) systems is proposed. The proposed antenna comprises an upper radiating patch with a nested three-ring design, a double-ring middle patch, and a ground patch. These patches are separated by two foam substrate layers and interconnected via two shorting stubs. This design ensures that the current distribution in each patch layer maintains the same rotational direction, thereby achieving excellent omnidirectional radiation performance when the antenna is mounted on metallic planes. The proposed antenna has a dimension of π × 17² × 2 mm³. Experimental results show a stable read range of 6.5–7 m in all azimuthal directions under an effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of 3.28 W. The proposed tag has advantages including miniaturization, anti-metal capability, omnidirectional radiation, and long read range, making it suitable for various application scenarios such as industrial automation and intelligent warehousing.
