Linking the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood, victim signaling, and narcissism: The need to be seen as a victim

Abstract
The Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood (TIV) captures a victim mindset, and victim signalers use perceived victim status for exploitation. In a sample of 400 participants, we investigated connections between narcissism, TIV, and victim signaling. TIV had more similarities through the Big Five factors with vulnerable narcissism, and victim signaling had similarities to vulnerable and grandiose narcissism. TIV mediated the relationship between vulnerable narcissism and victim signaling, Neuroticism and victim signaling, and grandiose narcissism and victim signaling. Thus, narcissism may be important in the experience of TIV and victim signaling.
