Abstract
Este artículo analiza la instalación de la Renta de Correos en Nueva España entre 1764-1773. Propone que el primer administrador de correos de México, Domingo Antonio López, actuó como un nodo que articuló los elementos estructurales de la renta (la normativa postal y la jurisdicción de correos). Su labor fue decisiva para crear dispositivos legales (bandos y tarifas) que activaron el funcionamiento de las oficinas postales. Asimismo, esta investigación plantea que los administradores de correos fueron, además de coordinadores del giro postal, acuciosos gestores documentales, ya que era necesario controlar el amplio espectro de la correspondencia oficial, además de la privada, para que la renta operara correctamente. Para ello, se refieren las ordenanzas, las instrucciones y las disposiciones que las autoridades imperiales emitieron, pero principalmente se analiza —desde una perspectiva administrativa e institucional— la documentación que la Renta de Correos generó y que se conserva en el Archivo General de la Nación de México. Esta fuente ilustra las estrategias locales que se formularon para aplicar la reforma postal borbónica.
