Abstract The aim of this paper is to perform a nonlinear stability analysis of the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> -dimensional Nambu–Goto action gas models. The energy-Casimir method is employed to discuss in detail the Lyapunov stability of the Chaplygin and Born–Infeld models. Particular solutions are considered, and their stability is studied in order to illustrate the application of our results.
