Abstract

The literature on alternative food networks provides an analytical framework forexploring alternatives to the conventional model, including short and local food supplychains (SFSCs). However, in this research field, logistics and transportation are largelyoverlooked, leaving the application of alternative principles to these functions unclear.This raises the question of the transport systems mobilized to move products withinSFSCs. The recent interest in delegating transport within these chains, coupled withthe emergence of dedicated service offerings, marks a key moment to critically assess therelevance of the notion of alternative logistics– a concept absent from the literatureto date. Our research is based on exploratory interviews with logistics service providersinvolved in the transport of food products marketed through SFSCs. We demonstrate thatthe objectives of the major firms interviewed are often removed from the core issues ofthese chains. In contrast, tailored service offerings are built on two objectives: supportingproducers and artisans as drivers of the development of SFSCs; achieving massificationof inbound flows into urban areas as a driver for the development of local food systems.These offerings reshape the organization of flows in various ways. In conclusion, weargue that the defining characteristics of alternative logistics offer valuable insights forrethinking the logistics function and influencing the practices of stakeholders. La littérature relative aux alternative food networks fournit un cadre d’analysed’alternatives au modèle conventionnel, parmi lesquelles les circuitscourts (CC) et les circuits de proximité (CP). Dans ces travaux, lalogistique et le transport sont des impensés, si bien que la duplicationdu caractère alternatif à ces fonctions n’est pas explicite. La questiondu système de transport mobilisé pour le transfert de flux des CC etCP se pose alors. L’intérêt récent pour la délégation du transport surles exploitations en CC et CP et l’essor d’offres dédiées se présentecomme un moment clé pour questionner l’intérêt de la notion de logistiquealternative, absente de la littérature jusqu’alors. En nous appuyant surdes enquêtes auprès de prestataires logistiques, nous montrons que lesfinalités des grands groupes sont éloignées des enjeux de ces circuits.L’offre adaptée se construit sur deux objectifs : soutien des producteurset artisans comme moteur de développement de ces circuits ; offre demassification des flux en entrée de ville comme moteur de développementde systèmes alimentaires locaux. Ces offres modifient diversementles règles d’organisation des flux. En conclusion, nous montrons que lescaractéristiques des logistiques alternatives fournissent des clés pour faireévoluer la fonction logistique et les pratiques d’acteurs.
