Abstract
This study is based on field data collected by the author in the Altai Republic in the first quarter of the 21st century. The paper describes the diet of Russian peasants in the region during the Great Patriotic War. According to informants, 1942 and 1943 were the most difficult and hungry years. Potatoes were a staple food. During the war, the importance of gathering wild plants increased dramatically. Children often set traps for small animals, such as moles, and also fished using traps. These economic activities literally saved them from starvation. A hand mill became an essential tool for grain processing during the war. Russian peasants, relying on traditional culture, made maximum use of available natural resources for survival.
