Abstract
Although the Zimbabwean crisis had both political and economic dimensions, which were interconnected, little is known about how the citizens survived the political turmoil. This article examines how Zimbabweans have responded to political insecurity. It draws on the idea of everyday resistance and a combination of primary and secondary sources. The article demonstrates that the political survival tactics devised by Zimbabweans enabled some citizens to regain their political voice, while others managed to secure themselves from physical harm only. The tactics included flight, silence, feigning compliance and belonging to the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front party, and utilising digital technologies, especially social media. The article concludes that although citizens can devise various forms of everyday resistance to navigate and resist political insecurity in semi-authoritarian environments such as those found in Zimbabwe, they are not entirely free from political insecurity and its concomitant insecurities.
