Two-Dimensional Beamsteering via Reconfigurable Phased Gradient Metasurfaces

Abstract
This paper presents a three-layer Phase Gradient Metasurface (PGM) excited by a conventional patch antenna for beam control and enhanced radiation performance. Each unit cell consists of a octagonal ring with two cuts, wherein two PIN diodes are embedded. By controlling the states of the PIN diodes, various transmissive phase differences can be achieved, demonstrating the principle of electromagnetic wave regulation, including gain enhancement and beam-tilting. A conventional patch antenna with a gain of 5.5 dBi and a bandwidth of 0.3 GHz is employed to excite the three-layer PGM, with a separation of 6 mm from the PGM. By assigning specific phase differences to each unit cell in the metasurface through different PIN diode states, beam directions at <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0^{\circ}, 11^{\circ}, 18^{\circ}, 25^{\circ}$</tex>, and 35° at 3.8 GHz are achieved. Additionally, this approach leads to an average gain improvement of approximately <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{1. 5 dBi}$</tex> across all simulated beam directions.
