A Reconfigurable Transmitarray Unit Cell with Transmission Phase and Phase-Slope Tunability

Abstract
Stacked Intelligent Surfaces (SIS) are a key technology for reducing hardware cost and implementation complexity in next-generation wireless systems. SIS is typically comprised of stacked active transmitarray, which performs wave shaping by adjusting the phase shifts introduced by unit cells across its constituent layers. In this work, we design a varactor-controlled transmitarray unit cell that operates at 2.5 GHz for wideband wireless systems. The proposed design provides a bandpass filter response with independent control over the tunable phase at the band-center frequency and the switchable phase-frequency slope. The unit cell consists of a wire grid, a square loop, and a loaded cross. Two sets of four varactors are used: one set is mounted in the gap between the wire grid and the square loop, and the other is mounted in the gap between the square loop and the loaded cross. These sets enable independent control of the slope and phase of the phase-frequency profile. Simulation results show phase-frequency profiles with two slope values, <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$6.75^{\circ} / \text{MHz}$</tex> and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$1.42^{\circ} / \text{MHz}$</tex>, and tunable phases at the band-center frequency of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$30^{\circ}, 0^{\circ}$</tex>, and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$-30^{\circ}$</tex>.
