Abstract

Emerging in-band full-duplex applications demand high isolation between transmit and receive channels. Isolation magnitude and bandwidth must both be prioritized. Here, we show how a network consisting of commercial mixers and microwave power dividers can realize frequency-converting nonreciprocity with large isolation bandwidth. Mixers allow for non-reciprocal phase shifts, which in-turn generate sum and difference phases that decouple transmit and receive signals. This non-reciprocity can be exploited to build a highly reconfigurable, in-band full-duplex phased-array feed. To prove the concept, a demonstration circulator is presented with a 20 dB transmitreceive isolation bandwidth of approximately 45%, and a peak isolation above 50 dB. While commercial mixers limit the receivepath noise figure, future work can improve the losses and noise performance.
